The CCGS 90th Anniversary season got underway with a magnificent weekend at Rye. There really is no better place to begin a golfing year and this lived up to expectations. 25 Society members, under the leadership of Bill Merry, gathered on the South Coast to enjoy one of the country's great links courses and one of the country's most unique and distinctive golf clubs. As always we were warmly welcomed by the Rye members, many friends for many years. The golf was fantastic, the food magnificent and the wines, as always, wonderful.

We gathered on Saturday morning for 18 holes of foursomes on the Old Course. The competition was fierce. The greens were quick and whilst the course had seen a lot of rain, it played beautifully. The same could not always be said of some of us and it was, therefore, little surprise that we went into lunch a few points down! The afternoon saw 9 holes on the Jubilee Course with a number of matches halved as the attraction of England v Scotland at Twickenham lured a few back to the clubhouse. There was time for most of our side to head back to our hotel in Rye before returning to the Clubhouse for a fabulous dinner with our opponents.

There was much work to do for the Society heading into Sunday morning's 11 matches and its fair to say that we were a long way off securing the number of points needed to repeat last year's win. So the honours went to Rye but the result was, as always, the least important part of the weekend. From start to finish, it was a joy to back at Rye, among friends, and all set for the year ahead. The following CCGS members played over the weekend: Bill Merry, Mike Gatting, Richard Baker, Chris Goldie, Guy McDonnell, Kevin Evans, Min Patel, Tim Wren, Stuart Waterton, Charlie Rowe, Neil Burns, John Shepherd, John Crawley, Steve Andrew, Tiku Patel, George Sharp, Paul Downton, Tony Pigott, Adam Ball, Ted Rose, Jon Hardy, David Price, Jon Varey, Graham Rose and Harry Latchman.
